Long distance swimmer Chris Gibbs caught the attention of the world with a spectacular crossing of the English Channel. The swimming culture of Barbados has been inspired by such feats of endurance and continues to add new members of all ages.

The jewel in the crown of Barbados' competitive swimming circle is surely the 50 metre Olympic-sized pool. Framed by the impressive Aquatic Centre, the pool hosts a range of activities including masters swimming, coaching sessions, water polo and synchronized swimming. There are six clubs who share this facility, but it is also open to overseas visitors.

The calm waters of Barbados are popular with swimmers. Many award-winning swimmers have been trained here. At the last regional championships, our island took home a slew of medals accompanied by some mile-wide smiles. Organized open water swims also strengthen our swimmers. Some of the more popular beaches for swimming include Mullins Beach and Paynes Bay to the West, and Sandy Beach to the South. The beaches are very attractive and protected from the rougher Atlantic ocean to the East, although swimming is also possible on that side of the island.

The Barbados Amateur Swimming Association regulates swimming. All beaches are legally public lands, although you can expect to pay for the use of hotel loungers.
