PGA Golf, Cricket World Cup, Barbados, Sports Teams, Matches, Pro and Amateur Athletes - Celtic Festival

If you like to see grown men in tartan skirts and have an appreciation for the finer points of bagpipe music, then you're bound to enjoy our Celtic Festival! Barbados has a larger population of these Irish lads and lasses than might be imagined and about five years ago they mobilized to create a festival for themselves!

Around the end of May Barbados plays host to a number of visiting dancers, musicians and singers who perform throughout our communities. There is also a strong sporting component to the festival and many rugby exchanges and golf tournaments take place, along with a humourous Caribbean take on the famous Highland Games which are organized around the Carib Beach Bar on the final Sunday of the festival.

The true heart of the festival however, is the rugby match. Teams are invited from many different regions of Barbados and are comprised of between seven and ten players a side. Often described as an excuse for a party, nothing could be further from the truth, as everyone knows that you never need a reason for a good party in Barbados!

Matches take place around the Garrison on Saturday and the winners take part in the Highland Games the following day. The Festival lasts for two weeks and for lively nightly entertainment, just visit pubs like McBrides, Shenanigans and the Carib Beach Bar. If you can hold your own in a round of tug-of-war or a three-legged race, you'll surely be a popular lass or laddie at the Highland Games!
