Maps, Weather and Rihanna! Explore Barbados, Sightseeing, Facts and Island Tips - Music

Rihanna
Rihanna’s favorite place to play. Where to find Rihanna, unplugged.
Her backyard. There’s still a real Caribbean out there. Where you’ll find chart-topping recording artist and Bajan native Rihanna. Visit Rihanna's web site here.

An air of festivity is hardly out of place in Barbados. Music’s everywhere, with portable radios on pavements, beaches and in markets. Many Barbadians learn to dance before they learn to walk, and this early appreciation for rhythm is clearly not diminished by the passing of years!

Many forms of music

Barbados can boast many native forms of music, as well as many top music stars. Tuk music is one of the island’s specialties and is named for the "tuk tuk" sound of the log drum. Calypso is also a popular genre and bands vie for the title of Calypso Monarch at the annual Crop Over Festival. Soca is the islands’ blend of Soul and Calypso and is often referred to as the form of modern calypso. Other genres include Spouge, which is a reggae-calypso hybrid, and steel band music, most frequently played at restaurants and events.

While all of the Bajan festivals feature music, Gospelfest, the Holetown Festival, Congaline, Holder’s Season and the Barbados Jazz Festival highlight the many musical ingenuities of our island. If music be the food of love, come play with us!
